As part of The National Rural Touring Forum (NRTF), Shooting Fish presented Jim Cartwright’s award winning play “Two”. Centering on the eccentric lives of those who frequent a northern pub and the landlady and landlord who run it.
Two follows a drunken woman who makes ridiculous attempts to spy on her secret lover, an ageing man who converses with his dead wife and an abusive relationship rears its ugly head.
With all the characters played by only two actors, this is a highly stylistic and physical piece of theatre that is as poignant as it is funny. The play offers a number of brief encounters with the weird, comic and at times tragic pub regulars, but the bickering landlord and landlady’s story ultimately carries the weight of the play. As tensions within their relationship reach boiling point a horrifying truth is revealed.
